If you’re looking for a midsize family SUV with plenty of room inside for people and their stuff, you’ll want to take a good look at the 2023 Chevrolet Traverse. Customers of the Greenacres Chevrolet dealer tell us the Traverse is a popular model, thanks to its comfortable ride, quick acceleration, and outstanding fuel economy figures. The Traverse has a maximum towing capacity of 5,000 pounds. On the outside, the 2023 Traverse will likely turn more than a few heads.
The Chevy Traverse received a refresh last year, so there are only a few changes for the 2023 model year. Some trim levels now have a leather-wrapped steering wheel instead of the standard plastic unit. There are two new exterior paint colors: Radiant Red Tintcoat and Sterling Gray Metallic.
The 2023 Chevrolet Traverse seats up to eight passengers in three rows. Buyers at dealers like the Greenacres Chevrolet dealership can get the 2023 Traverse in one of six trim levels, listed as LS, LT Cloth, LT Leather, RS, Premier, and High Country. Special edition packages include the Midnight Edition, Sport Edition, and Redline Edition.
The Traverse is equipped with a peppy 3.6-liter V6 engine producing 310 horsepower and 266 lb-ft, mated to a nine-speed automatic gearbox. All models get standard front-wheel drive and optional all-wheel drive. This powerplant includes a smooth automatic stop/start system that helps to provide excellent fuel economy estimated by the EPA at 18 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway with front-wheel drive and 17 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway with all-wheel drive.*
The 2023 Chevy Traverse gets excellent reviews from the automotive media. Kelley Blue Book writes: “The 2023 Chevy Traverse midsize 3-row SUV certainly has roominess on its side. After receiving a revamp last year (this second generation debuted for 2018), the Traverse’s generous space remains this Chevrolet 8-seater’s greatest attraction. That and its 310-horsepower V6. Large families going on road trips should be pleased with the amount of legroom and headroom in each row, plus the generous cargo space, while enjoying the muscular engine and noting how slowly the fuel gauge moves toward E.”
All Traverse models except the LS get standard second-row captain’s chairs that reduce seating capacity to seven. The LS has a standard bench seat in the second row that brings the total number of passengers the Traverse can accommodate to eight. Some models get the bench as an option.
The inside of the 2023 Chevy Traverse is a pleasant place to spend time. The cabin does an excellent job of shielding passengers from engine and road noise. There’s ample room for the vehicle’s occupants to stretch out and stay comfortable, with 157 cubic feet of passenger space. There’s plenty of room to store cargo, with a class-leading total of 98.2 cubes. According to Car and Driver, the 2023 Traverse can accommodate six carry-on suitcases behind the third row. There’s even more space in the form of cubbies in the first row. In fact, the Traverse has more cubby space than rival models.
Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is a handy feature that comes standard in the Traverse. While most new vehicles get standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the wireless version provides added convenience. You won’t have to fumble with wires to connect your smartphone.
Another feature we like is the Traverse’s dual-pane sunroof, which is standard in the top-level High Country trim level and available in the LT, RS, and Premier. The sunroof imparts a light, airy feel to the Traverse’s interior. It features a powered shade in the rear panel.
The base Traverse LS trim is equipped with more standard equipment than you might expect from the base model. It comes with 18-inch alloy wheels, cloth upholstery, automatic LED headlights, heated outside mirrors, three-zone climate control, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 7-inch touchscreen, a six-speaker stereo system, satellite radio, a Wi-Fi hotspot, Bluetooth, and six USB ports.
Safety is an important consideration for buyers in the market for a family SUV. The 2023 Traverse provides many standard advanced safety features, including a blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keeping assist, rear parking sensors, automatic high beams, and forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking. The upper trims come with a surround-view camera, an upgraded automatic emergency braking system, and adaptive cruise control.
