Is the 2018 Chevy Silverado Better Than the 2018 Toyota Tundra?
Although somewhat subjective, ratings, grades, and rankings are how the world work. Do you visit a one-star restaurant when the five-star restaurant across the street offers comparably priced meals? I don’t think so. The same can be said when it comes to buying a new Silverado or Tundra. One is a classic pickup that’s been serving America for decades. The other is relatively new and not without its issues.
If you’re on the hunt for a new truck in Coeur d’Alene or Spokane, WA, you’ll do no better than the all-star
Chevrolet Silverado 1500. Here’s how the 2018 Silverado vs. Tundra comparison pans out.
Fuel Economy
Full-size trucks are known to be unleaded lushes, so a few mpg here and there make a world of difference. With the 2018 Chevrolet Silverado, owners can quit making trips to the pump thanks to its combined 20 mpg fuel rating, which is the best EPA rating in its class.
The 2018 Tundra, on the other hand, returns just 16 mpg combined, meaning those Post Falls gas station attendants will be on a first-name basis with you.

Power
The reputation of the Silverado hinges on its production, which is why it offers best-in-class horsepower with its available 6.3L V8. It churns out an impressive 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque to tow a maximum of 12,500 pounds. That’s a half-ton of weight more than the max allowed in the Tundra (10,500 lbs.) when equipped with their 5.7L V8.
For all those trips through Spokane or up to Coeur d’Alene with your boat, only the Chevy Silverado will do.

Safety
Like its gas-sipping traits, the Silverado is also a master of deception when it comes to driver and passenger safety. It’s one of very few pickup trucks to earn a
five-star rating with the NHTSA, and that’s thanks to a slew of safety features and systems, including:
- Teen Driver – Parents can create settings to automatically mute the radio when seatbelts are unbuckled, switch on advanced safety tech, and provide teen driving report cards.
- Low-Speed Automatic Braking
- Safety Alert Driver Seat
- OnStar Automatic Crash Response
Crash tests didn’t hand out the same high grades for the Tundra. The NHTSA gave the 2018 Tundra just four stars, which is likely a result of a poor score in their rollover test. If you travel around Spokane frequently with the family or worksite colleagues, the new Silverado is a safer pick—literally.

Interior
Even the
critics at U.S. News consider the 2018 Silverado to be of higher quality than the Tundra, noting that the Silverado 1500 “has one of the nicest interiors in the class...[offering] plenty of optional tech features, like the intuitive touch-screen MyLink infotainment system.” Plus, the seats are wide and comfy, especially in higher Silverado trims.
Unlike the Silverado, lowers trims of the Tundra don’t come with the same high-end creature comforts. There’s no 4G LTE WiFi hotspot, Apple CarPlay, or Android Auto. Wireless device charging is not available, so on-the-go workers have to fumble around with cords. Navigation is reserved for only the tippity top trim levels. The standard 6.1-inch touchscreen is an obvious downgrade from the 7-inch display in the Silverado.
Spacious and determined to keep you productive no matter where you are, the 2018 Chevy Silverado offers a top-tier interior that is not to be messed with.
